IELTS, a certificate to certify your level in English
IELTS is an acronym for : International English Language Testing System. It is an international standing test created and used by the British Council and IDP Education Australia and the University of Cambridge.
IELTS is used to assess the English language profile of people wishing to study or work in an English speaking country. The majority of candidates are students and people looking to start an international career.
And for those who want to immigrate to English-speaking countries, some countries require IELTS certification as part of their application; a condition for obtaining a visa.
The two forms of IELTS test
There are two forms of the test:
IELTS Academic for those who are going on to higher education or professional certification.
IELTS General training, suitable for those who wish to study at secondary level or for specific training or work expertise in English speaking countries.
For both certifications, there are four language skills that will be assessed: written and oral knowledge, written expression and oral expression are to be assessed.
How the IELTS test works
Before taking the test, you need to make an appointment on the dates offered for the current year. You can choose the city from the list.
Each skill has a score of 9 points.
For Listening, there are 40 questions in the form of multiple choice questions to be answered.
For Reading, 40 different questions in the form of multiple choice questions on 3 different texts to be answered.
For Writing, two texts of 150 and 250 words each.
For Speaking, a face-to-face interview with an IELTS examiner. The examiner asks personal questions to be answered, asks for a presentation on a randomly selected topic and then continues with a discussion on a broader topic related to the selected topic.
The test takes about 175 minutes.
